Missing Appalachian Trail Hiker Found Dead in Maine Tent

Maine game wardens say 63-year-old Jeffrey Aylward, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, hadn't been heard from for more than a week

Maine game wardens have found the body of a 63-year-old hiker who hadn't been heard from for more than a week while hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Wardens say 63-year-old Jeffrey Aylward, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, was found dead in his tent on Monday in Township D, near the town of Rangeley.

Aylward, who went by the trail name "Dusty Pilgrim," was reported missing Saturday evening by family members who became concerned because they hadn't heard from him for 11 days.

Wardens said hikers reported having seen a lone tent.

Game warden Kyle Hladik found Aylward's body in the tent, about 50 yards off the trail near a popular scenic view called "Height of Land."

Authorities said they have no reason to believe Aylward's death was suspicious. He did have a history of recent health issues, according to game wardens.
