Two people have been indicted in connection with a grisly double murder in Peabody, Massachusetts, earlier this year.
Wes Doughty, 39, was indicted Tuesday by an Essex County grand jury on two counts of murder and one count each of rape, attempted arson, carjacking, kidnapping and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Doughty shot and killed Mark Greenlaw, 37, and stabbed Jennifer O'Connor, 40, to death in a home on Farm Avenue in Peabody on Feb. 18, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office. He is also accused of raping O'Connor, trying to set the house on fire, and carjacking a 64-year-old man several days after the murders.
The crime scene was reportedly so gruesome that investigators did not initially know how many bodies were inside and had to use X-ray equipment to determine the number of victims.
Doughty's co-defendant, 45-year-old Michael Hebb, was indicted Tuesday on two counts of accessory after the fact and one count of attempted arson. He had also been facing murder charges, but prosecutors said those charges have been dismissed.
Hebb was arrested in Peabody two days after the murders. Doughty evaded police for almost a week before he was finally captured in South Carolina while panhandling outside a McDonald's.
Both Doughty and Hebb will be arraigned in Salem Superior Court at a later date.
