A small earthquake was felt early Wednesday morning on Cape Cod and other parts of southeastern Massachusetts, according to preliminary reports from the Boston College-Weston observatory.
Seismograms indicate a preliminaray 2.0 magnitude earthquake was felt at about 1:30 a.m. in both the Wareham and Onset areas, Wareham town officials say.
Residents in Wareham and Onset had reported a "loud sound and shaking," according to the Wareham Department of Natural Resources.
Authorities said the observatory is conducting additional research and will provide an update soon.
Small earthquakes are rare but not unheard of in Massachusetts. Two struck in two days this December.
