Slushy Morning in Southern New England

Today (Thursday): Icy early, then gradual clearing. Highs in the 40s to near 50. Thursday Night: Mostly clear. Lows in the 20s to near 30. Friday: Mostly sunny. Highs around 40. (Published Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019)

It was a quick hit of moderate to heavy snow to sleet, to freezing rain Wednesday night, and rain through sunrise Thursday. Other than in the state of Maine, where snow and mix continue in a few spots, the system is mostly racing away from New England now.

In many cases where we had less than 2 inches of snow, it should melt off with the midday sunshine. But anywhere north, where we had more like 3 inches of snow, you want to remove it before it re-freezes later Thursday night. In the meantime, several hours of sunshine warms the air to nearly 50 degrees south. High in the 40s north.

A cold front may generate some upslope snow in the mountains Thursday evening. Otherwise, we’re mostly clear with temperatures going back down below freezing overnight.

High pressure moves in for the next two days with sunshine Friday and Saturday, high temperatures near 40 degrees.

The weather map is full of active systems though, and the next one races in on Saturday night. A brief burst of snow and sleet in southern New England will change to rain very quickly.

Low-pressure tracks north of New England on Sunday with a moderate to heavy dose of rain for southern New England, and a wintry mix changing to rain briefly before ending in the north. High temperatures on Sunday near 50 degrees south in the 30s and 40s north.

That storm is going to ramp up fast Sunday night, with much colder air whipping into New England and damaging wind likely by Monday morning. It’s going to be a mix of sun and clouds Monday with a temperature in the 30s, and wind gusting past 50 mph times.

The weather should quiet down for Tuesday before the next system comes in with a chance of snow or mix by Wednesday or Thursday.

It’s an incredibly active pattern going into March, stay tuned to our first alert 10-day forecast for the latest developments.
