Weather Forecast: Scattered Showers and Thunder

Tuesday night: Variable clouds, muggy. Lows in the 60s. Wednesday: Humid, scattered late day showers/thunder. Highs in the 80s.

    (Published Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019)

We have issued two First Alert days for storm and heavy rain chances on Wednesday and Thursday. We noticed the humidity already this afternoon, with clouds and scattered showers southeast thanks to a coastal low.

The rain there shuts off tonight, but watch for reduced visibility again with areas of fog through Wednesday morning as our temperatures cool to near dewpoint.

Once the fog evaporates Wednesday afternoon we will see some sunshine across southern New England. This can help to create more instability as a cold front approaches from the northwest. Scattered storms will develop as the afternoon continues and as temperatures warm to the mid-80s with high humidity.

The storms will be numerous across the mountains of New England, more scattered from a line through Bangor, Boston, to Hartford.

Any storm that moves through could be strong to severe with damaging wind gusts and heavy rain as the main threats. There is a low risk for a brief tornado across the Connecticut River Valley Wednesday afternoon.

Also, a mesolow could move through Wednesday night and that may also bring a chance for a brief tornado for eastern Massachusetts as that moves through. We will keep a close eye on this severe weather chance.

Wednesday night into Thursday, another front moves through slowly but will bring more rain and storms especially early in the day. Once we get to Friday, we have dry air taking over.

We will see sunshine and highs in the low 80s as we head into the weekend. There is a small chance for isolated storms in the mountains Saturday afternoon, but the rest of the weekend is dry.

Next week we may see a similar weather pattern with midweek storm chances.
