Police: Armed Robber Shoved 10-Year-Old Daughter Out of Car During Chase

Police in Springfield, Massachusetts, have arrested a man accused in the armed robbery of a Walgreens after a chase in which he allegedly shoved his 10-year-old daughter out of the car.

Twenty-nine-year-old Gilberto Dannel Diaz, wanted for the armed robbery of the Walgreens on St. James Boulevard last Sunday.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told necn affiliate WWLP a chase started on Putnam Circle late Friday afternoon. Narcotics detectives had spotted Diaz, who was reportedly picking up his 10-year-old daughter from the bus stop at the time. Police started to chase the suspect, who led them through Springfield, into Chicopee and back into Springfield.

According to Delaney, the suspect shoved his young daughter out of the car near Red Rose Pizza in the South End of Springfield. Lt. Thomas Maccini said she is going to be OK, and that she was not taken to the hospital.

Police continued to chase Diaz, who police say hit a vehicle on Cross Street, ditched his car and ran away on foot. Police caught up with him a short time later and took him into custody.

Diaz is facing numerous charges from the chase, including risk of injury to his child and four counts of assault and battery with his car. Police say Diaz damaged several cruisers in the chase.

During the pursuit, police say Diaz also discarded drugs from his car, which were recovered. The Department of Youth and Family Services is helping the daughter.
