The former president of a Massachusetts city council has been sentenced to 2 years in prison after pleading guilty to raping a teenage boy.
The Newburyport Daily News reports that Bert Reed, of Newburyport, was sentenced Monday.
Reed was arrested last year for enticing a 15-year-old boy into engaging in sexual activity.
Authorities say he assaulted the teen at a church where the 44-year-old Reed worked as a janitor. It was reported to police in April 2018.
Reed served as a Newburyport city councilor from 2000 until 2004. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2003. Reed also served on the school committee.
The boy's mother wrote in an impact statement that her son "is destined for great things" and Reed's actions "will not take that away."
