PD: Police Cruiser Stolen From Officer's Home, Shotgun Missing

Police in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, have recovered a police cruiser and another vehicle stolen from a local detective's home on Wednesday night, but say a shotgun that was inside the cruiser is still missing.

The theft occurred at the officer's home sometime overnight Wednesday. Police said the thieves broke into the officer's garage, took two sets of keys and stole an unmarked Ford Taurus police cruiser and a Saturn wagon from the driveway.

The Saturn was found near the officer's home and the Taurus was found on Bowden Street in neighboring Lowell around 9 a.m. Thursday.

A police-issue shotgun that was kept in the trunk of the cruiser was not found inside the vehicle when it was recovered and police are now searching for it. A pistol lockbox inside the cruiser was also stolen, but it was empty.

"Locating this stolen police weapon is our top priority at this time," Chelmsford Police Chief James Spinney said.

Chelmsford and Lowell K-9 units have been dispatched to aid in the search.
