A man wanted for arrest attempted to hit Massachusetts State Police troopers and other police officers with his car, then led a police chase through several communities before being arrested Friday, authorities said.

The driver was taken into custody after a roughly 20-minute standoff once his car had been disabled during the search, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The chase ended in Rockland near Hanover, where local police called the standoff a "major incident' and urged people to avoid Market Street "at all costs."

A man is under arrest after a police chase through several Massachusetts towns, then a 20-minute standoff.

The man who was arrested was identified as Giovanni Acevedo, a 47-year-old from Woburn. Police said he was taken to a hospital for evaluation and will later be booked on the six original charges he'd been wanted for as well as those from the police chase.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak to the charges.

The chase began about 12:23 p.m., after members of the state police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section had approached the man on foot in Taunton, while he was in his car, a Mercedes. He drove at the officers, police said, then took off onto Interstate 495.

The car pulled into a Home Depot parking lot in Bridgewater, then lost following officers on Highway 24, according to police. But the car was soon spotted in Raynham, and police chased it through that town, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater and Hanson, with no luck.

About 30 minutes later, an umarked state police car started following the car on Highway 53 in Pembroke and then onto Route 139 in Hanover, where local police gave chase. Rockland police laid a device to stop the car at the town line, and it worked -- the wanted car hit a curb and came to a stop, and was surrounded by officers, police said.
