Morning showers have moved away and now some clearing is expected by early afternoon. Temperatures quickly climb into the 70s and 80s with dew points also on the rise, making it feel quite muggy.
In Boston, this will be the first day of the year with highs in the 80s. The last time we reached 80 degrees was back on Oct. 10, 2018, and we are running behind the average first 80-degree day of the year. That usually happens on May 4.
This summer heat will be accompanied by scattered storms Monday afternoon and evening, especially over central and western Maine, most of New Hampshire, eastern Vermont, central and western Massachusetts and into northern Connecticut. Some storms could be strong to severe.
In-depth news coverage of the Greater Boston Area.
The primary threat will be for cloud-to-ground lightning, damaging wind gusts and hail. However, an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.
If you have plans to be outdoors, make sure there’s a safe place to hide in case a storm is headed your way. A good haven is a car with the windows up or a building. It’s NEVER safe to be outside during a storm, so be weather ready and have a plan.
The timing for these storms will be between 1 p.m. over northern New England and 8 p.m. as the cold front moves east. By Saturday night, drier air will filter in behind the front thanks to a northwest wind. Conditions will improve for most. However, one exception will be Maine, where showers will linger into Tuesday.
Both Tuesday and Wednesday will be filled with sunshine and temperatures in the 60s to near 70 but it will be gusty, too, with a steady breeze from the west between 10 to 20 mph.
Showers return late Thursday into Friday as another disturbance approaches New England.
As of now, Memorial Day weekend doesn’t look like a washout- showers are expected Saturday while Sunday stays dry under a mostly sunny sky. The actual holiday starts out bright with some clouds on the increase in the afternoon and rain chances possible at night.
Overall, don’t cancel your outdoors plans because there will be several rain-free moments to enjoy the beautiful weather. Temperatures will be close to average, mainly in the 70s.
