Ed Skrein Exits ‘Hellboy’ Reboot Following ‘Whitewashing’ Controversy

Skrein's character, Ben Daimio, is Japanese-American in Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" comics, and many objected to the role not going to an Asian-American actor.

To hell with that whitewashing controversy.

Actor Ed Skrein took to social media Monday to announce he was pulling out of a planned "Hellboy" reboot after his casting drew criticism as Skrein's character, Ben Daimio, is Japanese-American in Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" comics. Many objected to the British actor and apparently he agreed with the critics.

The backlash follows previous "whitewashing" controversies including the castings of Emma Stone in "Aloha" and Scarlett Johansson in "Ghost in the Shell."

Mignola took to social media after Skrein's announcement praising him for his decision to withdraw.
