Officials identified the 16-year-old Providence, Rhode Island boy who died drowning in a North Attleboro, Massachusetts pond Sunday.
Jonathan Lozada was swimming at Whiting Pond with two friends when he went under water and did not resurface. One of the victim’s friends attempted to reach for Lozada but he was quickly pulled deep into the water. Witnesses reported seeing the teen flailing his arms before going under water, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
The boy’s friends rushed to the shore to seek help, which prompted numerous swimmers to search the pond. Norton Fire Department rescue divers found the boy’s body after a 90-minute search. at an estimated 20 feet from the shoreline and 40 feet under water. Officials declared the boy dead at 7:04 p.m.
"And they didn't see him in the water anymore," North Attleboro Fire Chief Michael Brousseau said. "Nobody was really sure if he was definitely even in the water but unfortunately that's where we located his body."
The pond is known to be muddy and deep. No lifeguards are on duty at Whiting Pond.
No foul play is suspected in Lozada’s death.
