A 60-year-old woman was killed Thursday morning after she was hit by an MBTA bus in Chelsea, Massachusetts.

An MBTA bus Route 111 was traveling inbound on Everett Avenue at about 5:40 a.m. when the crash happened, according to Richard Sullivan, Superintendent of the Transit Police Department.

Authorities did not release the name of the victim, but did say she was a "local resident." The preliminday investigation indicates she was in the company of another person at the time of the crash, Sullivan said.

The driver, who was not named, has been working with the MBTA for 12 years, according to Sullivan. Although the bus driver was not injured in the crash, he was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

As per protocol, the driver will undergo a drug and alcohol test. He will not be driving any buses until the investigation is complete, according to Sullivan.

It is unclear if any passengers were onboard at the time of the incident.

Traffic is being diverted at Spruce and Chestnut Streets, according to Kyes. Officials urge commuters to seek alternate routes while the on-ramp remains closed for the investigation.

Authorities initially expected to reopen the on-ramp at about 8 a.m. State police announced just before 9 a.m. that the on-ramp reopened.

Transit and state police are leading the investigation on the crash.
