Runners hoping to compete in the 124th running of the Boston Marathon had to be even faster than last year's qualifying standards, despite the field being open to more athletes.
To qualify for the 2020 Boston Marathon, runners had to be 1 minute and 39 seconds or faster than the listed qualifying time for their age group and gender.
Despite race officials expanding the field to 31,500 participants, the time qualification left 3,161 runners out.
From 2015 to 2019, the Boston Athletic Association had opened the field to 30,000 participants.
The qualifying performances by BAA standards must have been met between Sept. 15, 2018 and Sept. 18, 2019.
The Boston Marathon takes place April 20, 2020.
