68-Year-Old Man in Critical Condition After Being Hit by SUV in Haverhill

A man is in critical condition Sunday night after being struck by an SUV in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Massachusetts State Police and the Haverhill Police Department responded to the serious pedestrian accident.

The accident happened around 4:45 p.m. in the area of Main Street and 18th Avenue.

The pedestrian, identified as a 68-year-old male Haverhill resident, was taken to a Boston area hospital with critical injuries. 

A preliminary investigation indicates the man was walking across Main Street when a Jeep SUV traveling northbound struck him.

Witnesses tell NBC10 Boston they could hear the thud.

"I just heard a big bump," Yisneily Jose said.

Jose says she ran out of the nursing home to see what happened. She saw clothing and shoes scattered on the street and an elderly man bleeding badly on the ground.

"All I could see were his legs, they were spread out."

Police say emergency crews quickly showed up to the scene. They are not releasing the victim's name at this time.

Neighbor Ed Reading says the driver of the Jeep did stop and got out of her vehicle to speak with police.

Witnesses tell NBC10 Boston the victim was thrown several yards after being struck by the SUV.

"She knocked him up to Oxford Street...that's a pretty far distance."

There are no criminal charges at this time.

Haverhill Police along with State Police spent hours on the scene Sunday.

The accident is under investigation.
