Traffic is backed up on Route 1 south in Saugus, Massachusetts, on Friday morning after a trash truck struck a bridge.
Heavy delays were reported as emergency crews responded to a dumpster roll-up truck boom that struck an overpass in the area of Walnut Street around 7 a.m. Photos from the scene showed a large hole in the metal support beams holding up the bridge.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said in a tweet at 7:45 a.m. that the two right lanes were closed. At 9:15 a.m. they said the left and center lanes had reopened, and the right lane had been reopened as of 10:30 a.m. The ramp from Walnut Street westbound to Route 1 south has also reopened.
Traffic flow was still impacted in the area as of 10:30 a.m. but was reportedly improving.
MassDOT said travel lane width restrictions on Walnut Street westbound will remain in place until interim repairs are made to the overpass. A contractor is planning to do the interim repairs during an overnight operation this weekend. Permanent repairs will be designed and implemented at a later date, officials said.
