Johnny D's in Somerville's Davis Square Is Being Demolished

by Marc Hurwitz

It looks like a Somerville institution that shut its doors last year is in the process of officially disappearing from the landscape.

According to several sources, including a tweet from @Jay_K21, the now-closed Johnny D's in Davis Square is being torn down this week, with a photo of the Holland Avenue structure showing that it is blocked off with construction workers shown out front.

A message on the Johnny D's Facebook page says that demolition is scheduled for Nov. 27 to Dec. 1. Some traffic delays are expected.

The club, which closed for good in March of 2016, had been in business for more than 45 years, starting out as a bar then becoming a country music venue before transforming into a renowned music spot and restaurant featuring a variety of local and national acts.

Earlier reports had mentioned that the Johnny D's site could become home to a handful of residential units and possibly a new restaurant or bar, but no specifics have been given of late.

The address for the old Johnny D's space is 17 Holland St.
