Man Arrested in Connection to Fitchburg Shooting

A 24-year-old man is in custody after a shooting in Fitchburg that left another man with a gunshot wound in his right shoulder.

Richard L. Bennefield, of Fitchburg, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. 

Fitchburg police responded to the ABS Gas Station located at 115 Lunenburg Street, for a report of a man who had been shot, according to police. The responding officers encountered a 33-year-old man with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

After investigating, police determined the assault took place a short distance away at a home on Normal Road. Police responded to the home and were able to find Bennefield.

The victim was transported to Leominster Hospital and was later transported to UMass Worcester by ambulance for treatment.

Police are unsure why the shooting happened in the first place.
