MBTA Details Additional Commuting Options for Wednesday Following Derailment

Following the derailment and subsequent delays of a Red Line train on Tuesday morning, the MBTA is advising commuters on what to expect for Wednesday morning.

Commutes could last 20 minutes longer than usual on the Red Line, as the trains will be operating at reduced speeds following the derailment. In addition, passengers on the Braintree branch of the Red Line will have to change trains at the JFK/UMass station on Wednesday morning in order to get to South Station and points forward. Riders heading towards the city on the Ashmont line wlll not need to switch at JFK/UMass.

Alternatives will exist for passengers who normally use the Red Line in the form of the Commuter Rail, which will be accepting CharlieCards and CharlieTickets on the Middleborough/Lakeville, Kingston/Plymouth, Greenbush and Fairmount lines, as well as the Fitchburg Line from Porter Square to North Station.

To accommodate extra riders, three additional Commuter Trail trains will be offered with departures from Braintree at 6:20, 8 and 9:30 a.m. These trains will also stop at Quincy Center at 6:30, 8:10 and 9:37 a.m., as well as JFK/UMass at 6:50, 8:20 and 9:55 a.m.
