A pedestrian has died after being hit by a van in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood on Sunday night.

State police said they responded to a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian on Gallivan Boulevard at Dorchester Avenue shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The pedestrian who was struck has died, state police confirmed Monday morning.

Footage from the scene on Sunday night showed a white van with a shattered windshield on the driver's side. A sneaker could also be seen still lying in the street.

State police said their preliminary investigation shows that a 2006 Chevrolet Express van was driving south on Gallivan Boulevard when it crossed through the intersection with Dorchester Avenue and struck the pedestrian. The traffic light was green at the time, police said.

The pedestrian, identified by police Monday as 53-year-old Torrance Hodges, of Dorchester, was taken to Boston Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver of the van, a 52-year-old Dorchester man, was taken to Carney Hospital in Boston but is expected to be OK.

State police said their ongoing investigation will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted.

The crash site was closed to traffic on Sunday night but was cleared around 1 a.m.

No further details were immediately available.
