A 70-year-old convicted child rapist from Massachusetts charged with new offenses that allegedly occurred in prison just before his scheduled release will go to trial in December.
The Eagle-Tribune reports that a judge Tuesday set a trial date of Dec. 11 for Wayne Chapman.
Chapman was convicted in 1977 of sexually assaulting young boys he lured into the woods by pretending he was searching for his dog. Two experts recently ruled he could be released because he is no longer dangerous.
He was scheduled for release this summer, but in June was charged with exposing himself and masturbating in front of prison staff and nurses.
Chapman's lawyer questioned the timing, calling it curious he was never accused of sexual wrongdoing in decades behind bars until just before his scheduled release.
