Massport officials announced Monday another major airline will soon be flying out of Worcester Regional Airport.
During an 8 a.m. news conference, Massachusetts Lt. Governor Karyn Polito joined airport officials to announce American Airlines will begin offering flights between Worcester and Philadelphia International Airport starting in October.
"Worcester Regional Airport is an important tool for connecting Massachusetts’ local economy to the global economy," said Polito. "American Airlines' investment will provide important support for more economic growth in Central Massachusetts and our administration looks forward to continuing our work with Massport and ORH to make this airport an important connector throughout the region."
An upgraded $30 million Category III landing system, which allows planes to land during low visibility, has increased the popularity of the airport over the last year.
In December 2017, JetBlue expanded its service with daily flights JFK International. It already had flights to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.
American Airlines plans to begin service between Worcester and Philadelphia on Oct. 4 with a departure at 8 a.m. and arriving at 9:05 a.m. The return flight departs Philadelphia at 9:30 p.m., arriving back in Worcester at 10:39 p.m.
