Eight people were displaced by a fire that caused the roof of a multifamily home in Lynn, Massachusetts, to collapse Tuesday.

One person who lives in the home on Allerton Street suffered a minor injury while standing outside, according to fire officials.

"It's not anything really serious," Lynn fire Chief Michael McBride said.

An off-duty officer with the Lynn Police Department helped save the residents.

Fire officials told NBC10 Boston the police officer noticed the flames and smoke while driving home from work, and then jumped into action.

People in the area said they called 911 around 5 p.m. after the fire started traveling up the back of the house from the first floor.

Neighbors watched as the roof on the two and a half story building eventually collapsed.

Two adults and two kids live on the first and second floors, McBride said.

A neighbor who called 911 told NBC10 Boston she noticed a strange odor on Monday morning and several hours before the fire broke out on Tuesday.

"It kind of smelled like plastic melting," Carol Meneates said.

Firefighters could not confirm the number of residents home at the time of the fire.

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is assisting residents displaced by the fire. The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services team also responded to help.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of late Tuesday evening.
