Flying Slab of Ice Smashes Windshield on I-93

Odair Servino unfurled a blue tarp from his Honda Accord to reveal a shattered windshield, certainly not what he was expecting to unwrap for Christmas.

Servino was driving on I-93 Sunday morning with his son when a slab of ice flew off the SUV in front him.

“I saw a big piece of ice come flying straight to me,” said Servino. “I tried to avoid it but I couldn’t. It fell on my windshield.”

It happened on the stretch of highway between Andover and Methuen.

His windshield was smashed, but Servino managed to pull over.

“I was so scared because when the ice fell on my car it was a big noise,” said Servino. “Scared me and my son.”

Neither father nor son was injured.

“Thank God we didn’t get hurt because we won’t be home, we would be in the hospital, spend my Christmas and with my son in the hospital,” said Servino.

Odair and his son were driving from Somerville to Methuen when the accident took place.

They were on their way to spend Christmas with family and they have a holiday message for fellow drivers.

“Make sure you clean the roof of your car,” said Servino. “You can send someone to the hospital or you can even kill someone.”

It’s unknown if the driver in the SUV had any idea what had happened.
