A Portsmouth man had to be helped down a hiking trail after he suffered from heat-related injuries Saturday during a 16-mile hike in the White Mountains.

Around 5:30 p.m., the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department got a call about a 29-year-old man that was unable to continue on the hike on his own. The man was hiking with his father on the Glen Boulder Trail in Pinkham Notch, according to police. Emergency medical responders arrived and he was helped down the mountain, where he was greeted by friends and family.

"This incident is a good reminder to all people recreating in the outdoors to plan appropriately when hiking, a statement from the department said. "When hiking in the mountains always carry appropriate equipment for unexpected situations and be prepared to spend the night if necessary. Having appropriate gear aides in safety.
