Police: Woman Struck by Gunfire While in Bed

Police in Lowell, Massachusetts, are investigating a shooting that occurred on Lakeville Avenue.

State and local police are investigating a shooting outside of a home on Lakeville Avenue in Lowell, Massachusetts, that left one woman critically injured.

The victim, 38, was lying in bed Sunday morning when she was hit by several gunshots fired from outside her home, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced.

Officers responded to the residence at 134 Lakeville Avenue just after 6:00 a.m. and discovered the injured woman. 19 shell casings were found outside the home. Police say it appears as if two different guns were used in the shooting.

Police say they're unsure how many suspects were involved in the shooting, but that the shots were fired from the outside into the home. Other residents inside, including a one-year-old child, were not injured.

"Evidence is still being gathered in this incident," said District Attorney Ryan. "But it appears already that this was a targeted shooting. Someone or several people riddled the home with bullets aiming to hurt or intimidate a specific individual in the household, and the victim was just an innocent party."

The woman was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment. She underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
