MBTA Blue Line Service Restored Following 'Power Problem'

    Power Problem Leads to Major Delays on MBTA's Blue Line

    A power problem on the MBTA's Blue Line Wednesday led to major delays Wednesday morning and many commuters having to take buses to get to their destinations.

    Shuttle buses for the MBTA Blue Line were deployed Wednesday after the service experienced a "power problem" near Government Center in Boston.

    The issue occurred just before 8 a.m. when the Blue Line encountered power issues between the Aquarium and Bowdoin stations on the inbound track, according to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

    Commuter Carrie Jung captured video of dozens of passengers getting off the train after the power failure. They were then forced to walk along the tracks to get out to the nearby station.

    "I heard a loud noise and the train came to a really quick stop," recalled Jung. "It was dark. There were people there with flashlights leading us out. It wasn't too long of a walk to get to Government Center."

    Shuttle buses substituted service for the line between Maverick and Bowdoin stations.

    As of 9:30 a.m., service had resumed for the Blue Line, with delays of up to 10 minutes, according to the MBTA.

    Shane Bobrero told NBC10 Boston he has taken the Blue Line from Swampscott into Boston every day for the last 30 years but has never seen delays as bad as Wednesday.

    "This by far was probably one of the worst ones I've seen in several years," said Bobrero.

    Some commuters took to social media to share photos of the situation.   

    Aerial footage of the scene showed dozens of commuters scattered outside the Maverick center during the peak of the rush hour.

    The power problems were the latest in a series of issues for the MBTA. A couple of derailments on the Red and Green lines in June have caused many commuters who rely on the MBTA to question the service and the recent increase in fares. MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said he appreciates everyone's patience despite the disruptions.

    "We are working day and night here to accerate our investment in the system," said Poftak.

    The MBTA said its initial investigations show that an equipment failure on a train near Government Center caused a power outage affecting nearby trains. The train is undergoing a full inspection and will be repaired, the MBTA said.
