Despite Gloom, Friday Will Be Quiet Overall

Today (Friday): Cloudy, late showers. Highs in the lower 50s. Overnight Friday Night: Showers. Lows around 50. Saturday: An early AM shower to splashes of sun between clouds. Highs in the 60s. Sunday: Rain likely for many, driest Northern New England. Highs in the 50s. (Published Friday, May 3, 2019)

We're going to have yet another chilly gray start to the day in New England.

The same old front that has been stalled nearby is just along the south coast right now. Most of us are on the cooler side with temperatures starting in the 40s with fog and drizzle. The front will lift north Friday, allowing for somewhat warmer air, and also the chance for rain showers and a thunderstorm.

The best chance for thunderstorms are in western and southern New England Friday afternoon and evening. It won't rain for much of the day, but it is mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 50s. When it does rain, it can rain quite hard for afew minutes with a brief downpour. There's not a lot of wind, but it is mostly off the ocean in places it exists.

We have more severe weather happening in the middle of the nation. Friday is the fifth day in a row. The remnant of those thunderstorms come through in waves.

We have one wave Friday afternoon, and then another one further south along the south coast in the night and first thing Saturday. There will be drier air coming into northern New England with Canadian high-pressure bringing back some sunshine.

The warmest weather will be at the Canadian border Saturday, near 65 degrees. But it now looks like the moisture and low clouds may linger in southern New England, perhaps even rain continuing from Rhode Island to Cape Cod through lunchtime. That will keep temperatures in southern New England more in the 50s.

If the sun should come out that we can get into the 60s, and even low 70s, it may happen late in the afternoon.

Weather changes fast this weekend. Another low pressure system is going to move out of Pennsylvania and pass west to east, south of Long Island and Nantucket Saturday night and Sunday.

That means rain returns to Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island Saturday night, and continues through at least Sunday morning. For most of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine we should be mostly dry Sunday with a good amount of sunshine the farther north you go. It will be in the 60s in areas where the sun will shine, otherwise in the 50s and perhaps 40s south again.

Monday should be an in between day, with several hours of sunshine before another front moves in from the west and north late day. Temperature should make it back to the 60s to near 70 degrees.

That front stalls over New England Tuesday with a mix of sun and clouds. There will be a slight chance for a shower and high temperature again near 70 degrees.

Then, another storm will move along the front, out of the Midwest with rain developing by late Tuesday or Tuesday night.

Colder and wet weather will return for the second half of next week. Hopefully clearing out for next weekend and Mother’s Day. Stay tuned to our First Alert 10-day forecast for further details.
