Republican Charlie Baker's margin of victory over Democrat Martha Coakley in the Nov. 4 election was the narrowest of any race for governor in the last 50 years in Massachusetts.

Secretary of State William Galvin, who announced final vote totals on Thursday, said Baker defeated Coakley by 40,165 votes, the closest outcome since Republican John Volpe defeated Democrat Francis Bellotti by about 23,000 votes in the 1964 governor's race.

Galvin, a Democrat who won re-election to a sixth term on Nov. 4, expressed disappointment with final statewide returns that showed just under 2.2 million of the state's 4.3 million registered voters cast ballots on Nov. 4. He says that marked only the second time since 1990 that voter turnout failed to exceed 2.2 million in a non-presidential state election.
