Cold and Bright Ahead of Mild and Wet Super Bowl Sunday

This morning, everyone across New England woke up to temperatures colder than what our friends in Minneapolis woke up to. However, that will change come kick off tomorrow for your Super Bowl plans.

Today, unseasonably cold high temperatures only stretch into the mid to upper 20s south, near 20 to upper teens under mostly sunny skies.

Clouds build in this evening and linger through the overnight with temperatures not sliding nearly as low as last night. We’ll see temperatures in the lower 20s south, mid teens north.

Super Bowl Sunday across New England will be cloudy, wet, but mild. We start off with some mountain showers in far northern New England, cloudy for southern New England.

By midday, showers start to develop in southeastern New England and temperatures warm up into the 40s. We could see some mixing between rain/snow for central Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, so we could see some slick travel, but this mix will be short-lived as the warmer air dominates for most of New England.

The warmth lifts north and eastward by 5 p.m., allowing snow showers to change over to rain for southern Maine, southern New Hampshire, southern Vermont, and the rest of southern New England. This could make for slick travel for your Super Bowl plans, so plan to take it slow on the roads and on your drive home after the Super Bowl.

Snow showers likely continue into northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and northern Maine where snowfall accumulations could reach 3-6 inches with the midsection of New Hampshire and southern Vermont and along interior Maine possibly reachinch 1-3 inches.

We could get some lingering raindrops into early Monday morning, but likely starting off the work week slightly colder and drier with highs into the mid to upper 30s.

The colder air funnels in by Tuesday with highs sliding below freezing and then the next chance for some widespread precipitation is Wednesday into Thursday — a system we’re keeping an eye on in terms of timing, temperature, and where the mixing will line up. But, likely snow showers north, mixing south with some rain showers for some.
