Franklin Park Zoo's Got a New Red Panda, and It Needs a Name!

You can vote on two name options: Gimli and Everest

Franklin Park Zoo in Boston has a brand-new and so far unnamed red panda.

The baby, born on July 6 to Fia and Hoppy, is expected to make his exhibit debut later this fall, according to zoo officials.

Baby red pandas stay with their mothers to "nest" for about the first 90 days of their lives, which this baby has been doing.

Franklin Park Zoo has announced the birth of a female red panda cub who is expected to make her exhibit debut this fall.

"We are thrilled to announce this exciting birth, and for guests to be able to watch this little one grow and explore when he makes his exhibit debut this fall. This is the second birth for Fia, who has been very attentive to the cub and is doing everything that a new mom should," said John Linehan, Zoo New England's president and CEO.

Caretakers have come up with two name options for the red panda: Gimli and Everest.

The public is invited to vote on their favorite of the two options on Franklin Park Zoo's Facebook page through Oct. 4 at 12 p.m. The winning name will be announced sometime in the afternoon.
