4 People Accused in Woman's Brutal Beating in Salem Appear in Court

"I remember a few people on me and I just, I didn't even know I was bleeding," the victim said

Three of four people accused in a brawl that left a woman with broken teeth and severe bruises appeared in court on Wednesday.

A woman, 20-year-old Jayda Byrne, said she suffered a concussion and had to repair some teeth that were damaged during the violent confrontation over the weekend in Salem, Massachusetts.

"I remember a few people on me and I just, I didn't even know I was bleeding," said Byrne, a nursing student at Salem State University.

Xavier Negron, Amanda Ricko, Angel Negron and William Martines face charges including assault and battery for the brawl. All but Angel Negron, who did not appear in court for his arraignment Wednesday, face additional charges as well.

Xavier Negron and Ricko both posted bail ahead of another court date on Dec. 5. They were ordered to stay away from the victims, Salem State University and the Village Tavern, where the incident took place.

Martines also posted and hired an attorney. The 20-year-old has another case pending in Woburn dating back to August.

Police said they responded to a call of a fight in progress shortly after 1 a.m. and responded to the Village Tavern, where two women were seen fighting. Witnesses told authorities the trouble began when Xavier Negron allegedly hit Martines in the face outside the bar.

Angel Negron, who is Xavier’s father, was also seen hitting Martines, according to witnesses. Police said Xavier Negron then assaulted Byrne and slammed her head into the pavement. Ricko allegedly kicked the victim when she was on the ground.

A third woman was also attacked after she allegedly tried to shield Byrne, police said.

An image released by Byrne’s brother shows a bandage wrapped around her head, which was covered in cuts and bruises.

"I just don't know how anybody could put their hands on a girl," Byrne said.

Details on what led up to the fight were not immediately clear.
