Lightning, Flooding: Storms Batter Southern New England Overnight

Strong storms battered southern New England overnight, knocking out power for thousands of homes and bringing flooding and lightning damage.

Torrential rain brought localized flooding to some areas, including Boston, where a section of Storrow Drive near Massachusetts Avenue flooded and caused trouble for drivers.

In Worcester, lightning is suspected of striking a single-family home on Chippewa Road. Parts of the chimney and roof toppled over as the storm barreled through the city.

Authorities said lightning destroyed the chimney of a house on Elizabeth Road in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Officials said there was minor, if any, damage inside the house.

In addition to causing damage to some homes and streets, the storms also knocked power for thousands of customers in the Bay State. As of 6:40 a.m., more than 2,800 customers were without power.

Although the storms made for dangerous conditions, no injuries were reported in connection with them.
