Massachusetts' highest court has rejected a challenge to rules limiting greenhouse gas emissions for power generators.
The Supreme Judicial Court ruled Tuesday against the New England Power Generators Association.
The group argued the state overstepped its bounds in issuing the declining emissions limits and contended the rules would actually increase emissions.
The court noted the electric sector accounts for about 20 percent of statewide greenhouse gas emissions. The judges said it would make "little to no sense" for lawmakers to exclude those facilities from the requirements.
Bradley Campbell is president of the Conversation Law Foundation. He called the decision an "unqualified win for climate leadership in Massachusetts."
Power Generators Association President Dan Dolan said group members are disappointed with the ruling but have been complying and will continue to comply with the regulations.
