The Rhode Island man charged with leaving the scene after striking and killing a woman walking with her 11-year-old son in Seekonk, Massachusetts, has waived rendition.
Authorities say 27-year-old Jeremy Schmidt, of East Providence, appeared in a Rhode Island court on Friday on a fugitive from justice charge and agreed to return to Massachusetts. He faces arraignment in Taunton District Court later Friday on charges that include leaving the scene-death resulting, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lane violation.
Police say 37-year-old Antonieta Vargas was walking with her son in the area of 893 Newman Ave. at about 7 p.m. Thursday when she was struck. The boy wasn't injured.
Police say the driver left the scene, but Schmidt was arrested at about 4:30 a.m. Friday.
His attorney had no comment outside court.
Massachusetts and Rhode Island state police departments, as well as Seekonk police, are continuing to investigate the fatality.
