A state agency has held a "quiet fireworks" show for the first time and hopes to make it an annual event.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management partnered with the student veterans organization at the University of Rhode Island for the fireworks, which were held Tuesday night.
The fireworks were lit near Fort Adams State Park in Newport. The public was invited to watch from Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, where the fireworks could be seen but not heard.
It was advertised as a show for people with hearing sensitivities, with "all the ooh without the ahhh."
DEM spokesman Michael Healey said on Wednesday that the agency would "enthusiastically welcome the idea" of holding quiet fireworks annually because they want to be as inclusive as they can.
