An 18-year-old died on Saturday when his car slammed into a telephone pole in Wilmington, Massachusetts.

Wilmington police initially announced they had responded to a serious motor vehicle crash that had occurred in the area of 90 Industrial Way, and that the roadway was closed to traffic.

Later Saturday, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Wilmington Police Chief Joseph Desmond confirmed the crash was fatal.

A preliminary investigation shows Kevin Stano, of Wilmington, was driving on Industrial Way around 2:30 p.m. when he lost control of his car while driving around a bend, striking a telephone pole. No one else was in the car.

Stano was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

There was no word on what may have caused Stano to lose control of his car. Video from the scene showed his vehicle was badly damaged in the wreck; it was later towed from the scene.

An investigation into what happened is ongoing.
