University of Maine Player Dies During Football Workout

A University of Maine football player collapsed and died Tuesday during a preseason football workout on campus.

University officials say training staff and first responders were unable to resuscitate 18-year-old Darius Minor, a political science major from Locust Grove, Virginia, after he collapsed on the practice field at about 1:15 p.m.

Minor was in the third week of UMaine's Freshman Workout. Officials say he was one of 17 first-year student-athletes participating when he collapsed about 15 minutes into a supervised light workout.

Interim athletics director James Settele says the Orono campus is "devastated by this terrible incident." He says the campus community extends its deepest condolences to Minor's family.

UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy added that the entire campus was mourning the loss of the student.

"The Athletics Department, our student-athletes and the entire campus mourn the loss of this bright and promising member of our community. We ask all to keep him, his family and his friends in your thoughts through this painful time," said Ferrini-Mundy in a statement.
