Death of woman found in Lawrence home investigated as apparent homicide

Authorities are investigating the death of a person whose body was found Tuesday in Lawrence, Massachusetts, as an apparent homicide, prosecutors said.

A woman's body was found in the basement of a house on Salem Street, a law enforcement source told NBC10 Boston and Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra. Later in the day, the Essex County District Attorney's Office confirmed it was involved in a homicide investigation.

Family members identified the victim as 21-year-old Diomaris Mejia, who lived at the home.

Mejia's father said he kept calling his daughter since the other night and she didn't answer.

Police say they were called to the house Tuesday morning for a wellness check. Law enforcement sources close to the investigation say she was stabbed to death.

Investigators could be seen going in and out of the home. Officials with the medical examiner's office were also at the scene.

No arrests have been announced. Prosecutors said that the investigation is active, but that there is not believed to be an ongoing threat to the public.
