Alex Cora on 2019 Red Sox: ‘Very Consistent at Being Inconsistent'

As the Boston Red Sox prepare for their final series of the 2019 season, manager Alex Cora had a perfect way of summing up a rather disappointing campaign from the defending World Series Champions.

"To sum it up: Very consistent at being inconsistent," Cora told reporters at Fenway Park on Friday afternoon.

To start the season, the Red Sox were primed to have another solid year under Cora, despite not adding a closer in the offseason. Still, their biggest problem, as Cora said, was inconsistency at the plate and on the mound.

The pitching staff and batters can be blamed for much of the inconsistency, but so can injuries. Although Chris Sale and David Price weren't strong seasons in general, the Sox' problems only got worse when both hit the injured list around the same time.

The Red Sox were able to beat some of the best teams in baseball, including the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers, but they also lost series to MLB bottom-feeders such as the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays and bring a disappointing 37-41 home record into the final series this weekend at Fenway against the Orioles.

This season has been one to forget for the Red Sox, and next season may not get any better -- Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez could both depart the organization as Boston looks to get under the luxury tax and add to their farm system.
