School Bus Driver Charged With DUI Says He Was Not Drunk

A man charged with driving students while drunk apologized, but said he was not drunk during the incident.

After pleading not guilty to driving students while drunk, a bus driver apologized but said he wasn't intoxicated.

Sixty-two-year-old Everett Redmond Jr. of Brewster was arraigned Monday on drunken driving and child endangerment charges.

Police arrested him in a Burger King parking lot off Route 6 on Friday after a student on his bus called home on her cellphone to say he was driving erratically.

Redmond told reporters outside Barnstable District Court he had a couple of drinks with a sandwich on Friday, but wasn't drunk.

The Cape Cod Times reports a police report said Redmond told a trooper he "had a really tough week, the kids got to me." Police said he told them he had four shots of vodka and an orange juice chaser.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled June 23.
