5 Kids Shot With BB Guns at Lowell School Playground, 2 Hospitalized

Two males "entered the playground and indiscriminately shot at the students" at Greenhalge Elementary School

Two males shot "indiscriminately" at children in a school playground in Lowell, Massachusetts, Wednesday afternoon, hitting five and sending two to the hospital, police said.

The BB gun shooting took place at Greenhalge Elementary School in the afternoon, according to a representative for an after-school program, which police said was running due to a half day for Lowell Public Schools.

All children were brought back indoors afterward, according to the Community Teamwork Inc. program's representative. They had earlier said that one child was taken to the emergency room and that the children received minor injuries.

Lowell police didn't say in their statement how hurt the children were, beyond that two were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

"My heart goes out to them," said Katie Kenison, whose 8-year-old daughter is a student at the school. "I can't even imagine. I would absolutely lose it if I got that phone call."

The incident began when three males were seen on bicycles circling the school, two with BB guns, police said. Two of them — their ages weren't given — "entered the playground and indiscriminately shot at the students."

"I think it's a little crazy, and hopefully, they can find these people," Kenison said.
