Police are investigating the attempted abduction of a child in Peabody, Massachusetts.

A 9-year-old boy was on Swampscott Avenue near William A. Welch Elementary School, Tuesday evening. He was walking with his Razor scooter when a man approached him from behind, according to police.

Authorities said the man covered the boy's mouth and dragged him to the parking lot of the school.

The boy broke free and ran home, police said. He was not injured.

The man is described as being about 5'9, according to authorities. He was wearing a red hoodie at the time.

Neighbors were on edge Wednesday.

"It could be my kid," said Marissa Euell. "It's scary."

"I hope they find the person. We want our kids to be safe on a daily basis," said Melanie Mason. "We don't want to have to worry about our kids going outdoors.
