Pressley Takes Oath of Office at Community Swearing-In Ceremony

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, who made history in November when she became the first black woman elected to represent Massachusetts in Congress, took the oath of office again on Saturday, this time at a community swearing-in ceremony.

The Democratic congresswoman addressed hundreds of cheering onlookers at Roxbury Community College, thanking them for their support, after Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey administered the oath of office.

“Our victory was only made possible because we built this broad and diverse grassroots coalition,” she said.

Pressley also discussed the partial government shutdown, taking aim at President Trump.

“The irony is that he has framed all of this in a Trojan horse of border security when our borders are secure,” she said.

Pressley pointed out that she co-sponsored a bill that would give back pay to federal contractors, who usually aren’t covered.

The shutdown is now the longest one in U.S. history, surpassing the 21-day shutdown in 1995 and 1996.
