Jayson Tatum erupted for 33 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists to help the C’s hand the Cavs their first loss.

The Boston Celtics handed the Cleveland Cavaliers their first loss of the season with a thrilling NBA Cup victory at TD Garden.

Cleveland entered Tuesday's game with a 15-0 record and the best offensive rating in the NBA but was unable to keep up with Boston's 3-point barrage. The Celtics shot 22-for-41 (53.7 percent) from deep while the Cavaliers made just 10 of their 29 3-point attempts (34.9 percent).

The Cavs cut the C's 21-point lead to two at the end of the third quarter. Boston was pummeled in the paint (60-36), but it did just enough to survive the final stretch and come away with a big win over its biggest competition in the Eastern Conference.

Jayson Tatum put on a show with 33 points (6-10 3-PT), 12 rebounds, and seven assists. All five Celtics starters scored in double figures and Payton Pritchard added 13 (3-6 3-PT) off the bench.

Joe Mazzulla and Jayson Tatum have only good things to say about Al Horford after his dominant performance in the Celtics’ win over the Cavs

BOSTON -- Jayson Tatum-and-Derrick White joint press conferences have become appointment viewing, and Tuesday night didn't disappoint.

The Boston Celtics co-stars -- who shared a podium together following a preseason game in Abu Dhabi and a late-October win over the Detroit Pistons -- decided to tag team their media availability Tuesday after toppling the previously-unbeaten Cleveland Cavaliers in a 120-117 win at TD Garden.

And it only took one question for things to go off the rails.

After Tatum chided White for bringing his new Sam Adams beer -- (Derrick) White Ale -- to the podium, a reporter asked Tatum about Al Horford and noted that Tatum in the past has referred to the veteran big man as his "favorite teammate."

Al Horford talks with Abby Chin after his monster performance in the C’s NBA Cup win over the Cavs

BOSTON -- Al Horford turned back the clock Tuesday night to help the Boston Celtics hand the Cleveland Cavaliers their first loss of the season.

The 38-year-old big man stepped up to give the C's 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting (4-5 3-PT). He added seven rebounds and three blocks for an all-around outstanding performance in Boston's 120-117 NBA Cup victory at TD Garden, which snapped Cleveland's 15-game win streak to open the campaign. He is the oldest player in NBA history to log 20 points, four 3-pointers, and three blocks in a game, according to Taylor Snow of Celtics.com.

Horford set a season-high in points for the second consecutive game after tallying 18 in Saturday's overtime win vs. the Toronto Raptors, when he shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range. That makes him 9-for-15 from beyond the arc over his last two games.

The five-time All-Star has come a long way as a shooter in his illustrious career. Cleveland Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson, who coached Horford from 2012-16 as an Atlanta Hawks assistant, has taken notice.

How can Celtics advance in NBA Cup? Updated standings and scenarios

Check out full game highlights from the Celtics’ 120-117 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The C’s hand the Cavs their first loss of the season and earn their fist NBA Cup game win.

The Boston Celtics' quest for the NBA Cup is back on track. But they'll need some help.

The Celtics handed the Cleveland Cavaliers their first loss of the 2024-25 season Tuesday night with a rousing 120-117 win at TD Garden. The victory also helped the C's stay alive in the NBA Cup after they fell to the Atlanta Hawks in their first game of group play.

Boston is in Group C of the league's second annual in-season tournament along with the Cavs, Hawks, Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls. Each team plays each other once in the Group Stage, and the team with the best record in the group advances to the Knockout Rounds. If two or more teams have the same record, the top two tiebreakers are head-to-head record and point differential.

The Celtics now sit at 1-1 with a +2 point differential after their one-point loss to the Hawks and three-point win over the Cavs. That's good for second place in Group C behind Atlanta, which is 2-0 in group play after beating the Celtics and Wizards.

Tale of the tape: How Celtics, Cavs stack up ahead of NBA Cup showdown

Tale of the tape: How Celtics, Cavs stack up ahead of NBA Cup showdown

Sam Hauser is looking forward to going up against the undefeated Cavs when they visit TD Garden on Tuesday night

All eyes in the NBA world will be fixated on TD Garden on Tuesday night when the defending champion Boston Celtics host the undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers.

It's a historic matchup the likes of which we haven't seen in almost 30 years -- a defending champ going up against a team that's on a win streak of 15-plus games. It's also an NBA Cup group stage game, and if the Celtics lose -- which would drop their record in the tournament to 0-2 -- it would be extremely difficult for them to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

If the Cavs beat the Celtics, they would become just the second team to begin a season 16-0, joining the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors, who set the record at 24-0.

How are the Cavs playing so well?

These staggering stats explain why Celtics-Cavs matchup is so historic

Sam Hauser is looking forward to going up against the undefeated Cavs when they visit TD Garden on Tuesday night

The most anticipated game of the 2024-25 NBA season to date will take place Tuesday night when the Boston Celtics host the Cleveland Cavaliers in an NBA Cup group stage game at TD Garden.

This wasn't labeled a "must-watch game" at the start of the campaign, but a lot has changed since then, primarily with the Cavs.

The Cavaliers have started the season 15-0. They are the third team to begin a season with 15 consecutive wins, which is the second-longest such streak in league history. The record belongs to the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors, who started out 24-0.

There's more historical context to this Celtics-Cavs showdown. It is the first game in almost 29 years to feature a defending champion playing against a team that is on a win streak of 15-plus games, according to NBC Sports Boston's Celtics stat guru Dick Lipe.

Celtics Mailbag: Porzingis nearing return, scouting the Cavs and more

Celtics Mailbag: Porzingis nearing return, scouting the Cavs and more

Chris Forsberg reacts to the Celtics’ announcement that Kristaps Porzingis has moved to the next step in his recovery process from offseason surgery and explains why he thinks the big man could return by early December, ahead of his projected timeline.

In the midst of a rare break early in the 2024-25 regular season -- just one game in five nights -- the Boston Celtics delivered a surprise jolt of off-day news with word that Kristaps Porzingis has progressed to the next phase of his injury rehab.

Porzingis worked out with the Maine Celtics at the Auerbach Center on Monday, and the team said he would "continue to ramp up his workload” after being recalled from that G-League assignment immediately after. The big question, and one that quickly became the most popular when we ripped open this week’s Celtics Mailbag, was when Porzingis might make his season debut.

All indications are that Porzingis has been tracking on an optimistic timeline. He’s engaged in pregame workouts that now look even more rigorous than some of the sessions before his playoff return. Porzingis has been traveling with the team, something that players with longer timelines tend to avoid.

Then there’s this: We asked Porzingis in late September whether the team’s success, coupled with the obvious goal of winning another title, might make it easier for him to embrace a slower comeback, to exercise extreme caution before his return. He dismissed the notion.
