Images from the scene showed significant damage to the building. Dark black smoke could be seen billowing from the two-family home Monday afternoon.
Firefighters said the cold and icy conditions complicated the response.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is believed to be accidental and not suspicious. Investigators determined that the fire began near a couch in the first floor living room near the front left of the home. They found smoking materials and an electrical outlet in the area but have not determined the exact cause.
